Avian Wonders
Project: Build A Bird
In this lesson, we’ll look at what makes birds unique and fascinating to study! We’ll then begin to design birds of our own, using recycled cardboard scraps.
Flying High
Project: clothespin automaton
In this lesson, we’re digging into physics and the art of flight. We’ll look at the 4 forces of flight: lift, gravity, thrust and drag.
We’ll then try our hand at making a simple flapping bird automaton (mechanical device) using simple materials like paper and clothespins.
Flying Far
Project: marble run
In this lesson, we’ll learn why some birds migrate and which long-distance flier travels over 11,000 miles every year.
We’ll then tinker to make a marble run to simulate a chimney swift’s journey from North America to South America.
Owls
Project: cranky automaton
In this lesson, we’ll discover some of the unique creature features of owls and why they’re the night-time ninjas of the bird world!
We’ll then work to design and build an automaton (simple mechanism) that makes an owl’s head rotate.
