Shannon Newby is the Founder and Executive Director of Kid Lab, a new nonprofit makerspace and community art collective. In her role, she works closely with a team of local artists and educators to design playful learning experiences for young children and create community-driven art projects that pop up around the city. She has worked with organizations like Marbles Kids Museum, the Portland Children’s Museum, Moore Square, Dix Park and a number of local schools to design site-specific art projects, often created in collaboration with children and their families.
Shannon has a BA in studio art and education and MA in applied theology and visual art.
When she’s not teaching or spinning up new projects, Shannon can usually be found tinkering in her workshop or riding her bike in East Raleigh with her husband and two daughters.
Kid Lab
Kid Lab is a nonprofit makerspace and community art collective. Nestled inside Read With Me bookshop, Kid Lab is the newest addition to downtown Raleigh’s growing Play District. Through child+caregiver workshops, STEAM labs, large-scale public art projects, and other play-filled learning experiences, Kid Lab inspires wonder, sparks creativity, and builds community. The Kid Lab team is committed to playful learning for all kids and grownups--regardless of means--and offers a pay-what-you-can system for their workshops and labs. Come on over, Raleigh: it’s time to play!
